The 2016 season will see the changing of the guard with John Manenti moving to Director of Rugby and the retirement of Hugh Perrett and Ben Batger. With minimal recruitment last year John has been busy finding new talent to compliment the already talented group of players at Eastwood. Five of those recruits will be on show this weekend when defending Australian Club Champions, Eastwood, travel north to take on 2015 BLK Queensland Premier Rugby winners Souths. The game will be played this Saturday commencing at 4pm on Souths home ground – Chipsy Wood Oval Yeronga Memorial Park Annerley.
The five new players in the squad to take on Souths include two who come with NRC credentials. Jerome Mackenzie had a stand out 2014 season with the Rams before suffering an injury that saw him miss most of the 2015 season with his new club Easts (after transferring from Penrith). Jerome has ready worn the Woods jumper having played in our sevens teams a few weeks back. Cohen Masson, who learnt the game in his native New Zealand was one of the best for the Rams this year. Cohen also started his Australian career with Penrith before spending the last three seasons with West Harbour. The other three also have strong rugby pedigrees. Joel Luani, an Eastwood junior, returns to join his brother Tai after a stint with Wests Tigers in the NRL. Joel was an Australian School boy representative in 2010 in a team that included Jed Gillespie, Hugh Roach, Guy Millar and Steve Cummins. Harry Randell from Kings played Australian Schools in 2012. Harry comes to us from University playing Colts 1s in 2013 and 2014 before moving to grade last season. Finally Jack Morrison comes straight into this squad from Riverview 2015 First XV. They are only a few of the new players who will be wearing the blue and white this year. More on those other new players closer to the start of the season.
Eastwood squad of 22 players along with their support staff will fly out Saturday morning. They will be joined at the ground by one Woods fanatics who is taking the train to be there to watch his beloved Eastwood. It is a great opportunity for all our club members and supporters who now reside north of the border to come and watch Eastwood take on the best Queensland club rugby has to offer. The squad includes nine players from last years premiership winning squad. They are joined by John Grant and Ben Shorter whose 2015 season was cut short with injury along with a number of talented players who are pushing for a shot at first grade this year.
All will be looking to make the most of their opportunities to impress the selectors with the first round of the Shute Shield only three weeks away and first grade spots up for grabs.
The following week we host grade and colts from University and the week after that it will be the Parramatta club’s turn to come to Millner.
And then it’s the first round against University. The wait is almost over.

The Eastwood Club turns 70
This week the Eastwood Club – next to the station in the heart of old Eastwood – turned 70.
There are strong links between our two Clubs – They’ve been a sponsor of our Colts in recent years but its goes way back, further than that. When we first started back in 1947 at the Top Oval at Eastwood, the boys had their post match protein shakes and pasta at The Eastwood Club ( then known as Eastwood Enterprises) so it was a pleasure to join with their Board and members to raise a glass to a terrific innings – with many more to come
Robin Timmins calls Time
Did you feel the earth shift on its axis? Moon look a bit bluer? Its because Robin’s retiring from NSW Rugby after 48 years (bit soft if you ask me… whats wrong with hanging on for a neat 50?)
Robin’s been the referees coordinator for many years and was our first female ref. Because she’s a ref people assumed she only had one eye – but shes definitely got 2, I’ve seen them – one’s blue and the other’s white – there is no more rusted on Woodies supporter than Robin.- how on earth are we going to win any games now we don’t have someone on the inside?
There’s a bit of a celebration with a few drinks on the verandah at the Uni trial in a couple of weeks.. Come along and get your photo taken with a real Legend
